Drop Shafts
For more than 20 years, Case has been installing the drop shafts that connect Chicago’s combined sewage and storm water systems to a deep tunnel collection and storage system more than 200 ft beneath the surface. Since the majority of these shafts are located in residential and commercial areas, blasting through the deep rock typically encountered some 70 ft below grade is not an option. With Case’s drilling expertise and specialized equipment, shafts up to 12 ft in diameter have been safely installed to depths of up to 250 ft in advance of the tunneling operation. This technique can be applied in any urban location where large-diameter, vertical, connection shafts through rock are required.
